Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a noninvasive technique that involves applying a low frequency electric current to nerve fibres in the skin to ease pain. This treatment uses a mild current in order to prevent nerve cells from bone pain transmitted to the brain. The aim is to stimulate other nerve endings in the skin, releasing a substance that relieves pain. The nerves generate a natural analgesic substances (beta-endorphins) and prevent bone cells that perceive pain from becoming activated. The stimulation has to be regulated in intensity and frequency in each case and patient, along with the pulse period and rest.
