Testicular biopsy is a surgical technique which is used to obtain a sample of testicular tissue through an incision in the scrotum. The objective of this procedure is to diagnose a type of disease, or be a therapy for assisted reproduction. In the former case a sample of testicular pulp is taken to assess testicular function and to discover if testicular tissue produces spermatozoids or not. It can also be done for a genetic study or meiosis. Regarding the therapeutic objective, the biopsy is carried out to extract immature spermatozoa, if any, for assisted reproduction and freezing of a spare sample for subsequent reproduction cycles. Before carrying out the biopsy, the man undergoes both a physical examination and a hormonal analysis, to establish if this test is required.
