Problems in the jaw and in the muscles controlling the jaw are referred to as temporomandibular disorders. These can cause significant pain or give the patient discomfort, especially as the disorder in some cases can be long-lasting rather than temporary. Common symptoms include pain in the jaw area, or tenderness to the touch, also felt in the neck, shoulders, and face. The patient may also have difficulty chewing or biting, and may hear clicking or popping sounds in the jaw when the mouth is opened and closed, for example while chewing.
