Systemic photoprotection is the one that goes beyond the skin and acts at a general level within our body. It is a group of immune-photo protective drugs that are taken orally. The main advantage is that being systemic, its protection is global and acts on the entire skin surface. The main ones are beta carotenes, which are usually recommended for solar intolerances or as a preventive measure in people with fair skin. They prepare the body for sun exposure and will produce an increase of pigments to decrease the rapid onset of erythema. The drawback is that they are not preventative of skin cancer. There are also Vitamins A, C, D and antimalarial medication.
