Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that puts pressure on the spinal cord and roots. When located in the lower part of the spinal column it is known as lumbar canal stenosis, while when the narrowing occurs in the top of the spine, it is called cervical canal stenosis. The lumbar and cervical areas are usually the most affected, although the narrowing of the canal does not cause pain if it does not compress any nerves. Spinal stenosis often occurs gradually due to the ageing process and the deformation of bones and tissues around the spinal canal. It usually affects people who are over 50, although it can also affect young people who suffer some type of spinal trauma. The treatment includes taking medications (anti-inflammatories or steroids) to reduce the pain and the inflammation, as well as resting, or doing some physical therapy. Surgery is recommended when there is nerve compression that progressively worsens.
