Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is a technique used in in vitro fertilisation treatments that allows the selection of embryos in order to avoid of genetic and chromosomal diseases. This technique is authorised for the detection of serious hereditary diseases which show early in embryonic development and for which there is still no cure. In these cases, the preimplantation diagnosis allows the selection of fertilised ovules where the embryo is exempt of genetic diseases before being transferred to the uterus. The diagnosis is made from the analysis of one of the cells of the embryo to determine if it is a carrier or not of a mutation of a particular gene; it can then be selected or discarded for implantation. In this way, the chances of success of in vitro fertilisation treatments are improved and the risk of abortion is reduced.
