What is lip augmentation?
Lip augmentation and reshaping consists of changing the appearance of the lips.
Before the procedure, a cream or localised cold is applied to the area to reduce sensitivity.
Why is it performed?
Lip augmentation is performed to add volume to the lips, to make them look more defined and firmer and to lift the corners of the mouth.
What does it involve?
A filler is used to augment the lips. This may be hyaluronic acid, a substance that adds volume and stimulates the production of collagen, or fat extracted from the person himself/herself and then purified. Both types of filler give a natural, immediate effect when injected. However, as these substances are resorbable by the body, the effect will gradually diminish over time.
The procedure usually takes around 20 to 40 minutes and the results last from 6 months to a year. After this time, the procedure can be repeated. If a permanent lip augmentation is desired, then cheiloplasty is the best option. This involves different implant or grafting techniques (using the person’s own fat or other substances such as collagen or Gore-Tex) to increase the volume of the lips.
How to prepare for it
The specialist may recommend treating the area with a personalised combination of cosmetics a few days before the procedure.
Post-procedure care
There may be some slight inflammation (which can be treated with ice) or redness after the procedure, or you may notice nothing at all.
The following precautions should be taken after lip augmentation:
- Use lip sun protection if sunbathing
- Do not massage, nibble or press the area.
