What is female genital surgery?

Female genital surgery is surgery of the female external genitalia, most commonly of the labia minora (nymphoplasty).

There are different techniques for performing reduction of the labia minora when they are larger than usual or when they have an abnormal shape (hanging or asymmetric), possibly causing discomfort during sexual relations.

Advances in female genital surgery have led to the development of many techniques that are minimally invasive, requiring only local or regional anaesthesia and translating into a simpler and shorter recovery.

Why is female genital surgery done?

Initially it seemed that female genital surgery would be limited to women experiencing urinary incontinence or with lax tissue as a result of multiple births. However, today, many women choose to have this surgery for aesthetic reasons or to be able to experience pleasurable sexual relations again.

What does female genital surgery involve?

There are different genital surgery techniques: many women want to change the appearance of their labia; others want to restore the elasticity of their tissues, enlarge their G-spot or change the size of their clitoris, for example.

One of the most sought-after techniques is labiaplasty, i.e. modification of the labia majora or labia minora of the vagina.

How to prepare for female genital surgery

As with any surgical procedure, you will have to undergo an examination to determine whether you are in good enough health to undergo an operation. However, the pre-operative requirements of female genital surgery vary depending on the particular technique to be used.

Post-operative care

The post-operative period and recovery also depend on the technique used. Currently, many female genital surgical procedures are performed using minimally invasive techniques and do not necessitate a hospital stay. Furthermore, absorbable stitches are very frequently used.

After the operation, most women are advised to maintain genital hygiene particularly for infection prevention and to not wear tight clothing.
