What is colon hydrotherapy?

Colon hydrotherapy, or a colon cleanse, is a bowel cleansing treatment to improve intestinal transit and to activate the circulatory system. The aim is to eliminate accumulated waste and toxins, thus alleviating pressure in the abdominal area and combating intestinal problems.

Why is it performed?

This technique is primarily used as an intestinal cleansing system for people suffering from chronic constipation. In fact, waste can accumulate in the folds of the colon even in those who do not have constipation and whose intestinal transit is regular.

To maximise the results of colon hydrotherapy you are advised to follow a high-fibre diet and to maintain healthy lifestyle habits, including regular physical exercise.

What does it involve?

Colon hydrotherapy consists of introducing a cannula with warm water at low pressure into the large intestine through the anus, to eliminate the accumulated waste. This boosts the reabsorption of water and minerals. While the water is being introduced, a massage is performed to regulate the contractions and rhythm of the colon in order to restore its functioning.

Colon hydrotherapy sessions last around 45 minutes, and complete treatment for the entire colon usually requires three sessions.

Preparing for colon hydrotherapy

Colon hydrotherapy does not require any prior preparation. It is a non-invasive treatment with no side effects. However, certain contraindications should be considered, and people with one or more of the following conditions should avoid colon hydrotherapy:

Post-treatment care

You can return to normal activities immediately after the colon hydrotherapy session. You don’t need to follow any specific instructions after the treatment, but to optimise the results you should maintain healthy eating and physical activity habits.
