Vaginismus is the involuntary contraction of the muscles of the vagina that causes it to close during sex, causing pain and coital intercourse difficult or impossible. The most common symptoms are pain in the penetration or a pelvic exam. It is a rare disease, which in most cases have psychological causes as trauma or sexual abuse in the past, fear of pregnancy or a history of discomfort during intercourse. No single treatment, but a combination of several, led by a specialist in sex therapy to educate and advise on the problem. Kegel exercises, which consist of the contraction and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles are also recommended.
