Cervical herniated disc is the compression of the spinal cord or nerve root that occurs when a portion of an intervertebral disc moves in the cervical area (neck). Hernias usually affect the discs are in the lower area of the back (lumbar) or neck (cervical spine). The pain caused by a hernia may extend from the back towards the leg, or to the arm and cause leg or arm pain. Most often, the ruptured disc occurs naturally due to ageing and deterioration, but can also occur in younger people due to various causes. The trigger for a healthy disc to herniate can be a trauma, a violent blow or moving / lifting badly. Cervical surgery may be required to reduce pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots.
