An ankle replacement seeks to remove the joint and bone causing problems and replace them with prosthetics. The surgeon makes an incision and cuts away or removes the damaged bone and joint. They then insert a new artificial joint and connect it to the newly cut down bone. The surgeon pluts the tendons and muscles back into place and sews up the incision. Some reasons for performing an ankle replacement are osteoarthritis, infection, rheumatoid arthritis, or bone fracture.
