Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome is when a baby cannot gain enough oxygen as its lungs are immature. It usually occurs in premature babies as it is due to a lack of surfactant in the lungs, a substance that keeps the lungs inflated and allows air to circulate freely. Other risk factors can be maternal diabetes, an underweight baby or other diseases.
